Greetings Falmouth Democrats:
It is a new year. I think it is fair to say that most of us were happy to see 2017 come to an end. While the past year brought us inspiring new levels of protest and activism, it is no exaggeration to say that in the last 365 days this administration has already done significant damage on just about every front. From the gutting of the EPA, to our response to climate change; from policies impacting women’s access to health care, to the undermining of equal rights for LGBTQI citizens; from the reassertion of racially biased sentencing requirements in the criminal justice system, to the constant assault on the ACA; and of course the passage of a tax overhaul that favors the wealthy and corporations and jeopardized the future of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, this administration and the Republican majorities in the House and Senate have leveraged their power to rollback many of the advances we had come to take for granted.
The past year has shown us that we not only fight to gain rights but we must continue to fight to keep them. The only way to stop the regressive policies of the Trump administration is to re-balance the House and Senate. We need to nurture the alliances that were forged in 2017 and build new ones with a broad-based coalition. Our message has to be relevant and the voices of the party must be diverse and representative. It’s a tall order but it is achievable, and more importantly it is essential.
We have a lot of work ahead of us. We hope you will join FDTC in the coming year as we push forward to protect the values that represent the best of our country.
